Women in media are often subjected to submissive, self-sacrificing stereotypes, often taking care of domestic chores. The works of filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, however, have defied these stereotypes since the beginning of his career. Indeed, he consistently creates women who are both real and relatable to a wide audience. In this blog, we explore how Miyazaki has created strong women and girl characters who do not net a savior.
